“Overcoming Temptation Jesus’ Way” (1/5/14)

Pastor Blaik J. Westhoff
Matthew 3:13-4:17
1. Temptation often follows a significant spiritual event in your
life. Have you ever experienced temptation at that time?

2. Has succumbing to temptation led you away from being the person God
created you to be and doing what God created you to do?

3. What example did Jesus give us (individually and as a congregation)
when facing temptations meant to distract us from fulfilling God
mission for us?

1. The enemy doesn’t care about fight fair, he will often come to
tempt us at our weakest point. How can you defend yourself against
tactics like that?

2. As verses 5 and 6 demonstrate even the devil can quote the
scriptures. In light of that fact what is a more powerful tactic
against the devil; quoting the scriptures or being prepared ahead of
time by applying scriptures in your life?

3. Martin Luther has been quoted as saying “You may not be able to
prevent a bird from flying over your head but you can stop it from
building a nest in your hair”. What he meant is this; temptation may
“fly through your mind” without any prompting from you but that
doesn’t mean you need to follow through with that temptation. Pray to
God in that moment of temptation and He will provide the way out.
